“Publisher-immunity protections” are regulations which provide high levels of immunity to social media platforms for any content that might be shared or propagated by their services. These protections generally include two main features. First, they protect social media platforms from civil liability for any content that might exist on their site. Second, they allow these platforms to act as they see fit in moderating or removing content (even when it might otherwise be constitutionally protected). Absent these protections, companies would be subject to government regulation and could be held liable for content hosted on their platforms. These protections do not extend to blatantly illegal or extreme content.
