In 2019, a popular democratic movement successfully won a peaceful revolution against Omar al-Bashir. Two sudanese armies, the SAF and RSF, took control of the state under a transitional government which planned to conduct free elections. However, the armies repeatedly delayed elections and all transitional governments have broken down with the army retaining authority. Since then, multiple renegotiations have failed to successfully transition power to the people and instead sparked a civil war between the SAF and RSF. The SAF was the formal military structure of al-Bashir’s government. The RSF was a paramilitary group operated by the government formed out of militias in the west of the country. In recent years, the RSF has conducted a campaign of violence against ethnic minorities in the country. Sudan is mineral rich and has caught the interests of multiple regional and international actors including, Libya, Yemen, the UAE, and Russia. America and China are both trying to score diplomatic victories negotiating peace in the country.
