The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) is the governing body for college sports in the US. In August 2021, the NCAA passed a Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) bill which allowed players to profit off of their own name, image, and likeness for the first time. Many state governments quickly approved frameworks for the compensation of college athletes, with varying levels of breadth and depth on types of compensation which are allowed. Since the passage of the bill, student-athletes have utilized the transfer portal to switch between universities at record rates.
