W. H. Auden writes in his poem “September 1st, 1939” - referring to the date WW2 began - the line: "We must love one another or die." After originally publishing the poem in 1940, Auden refused permission for it to be reprinted in collections of his work for many years. He finally relented, granting permission for the poem to be reprinted with the this famous line amended to read: "We must love one another and die."
