The medicalization of mental health refers to mental health becoming defined and treated in similiar ways to physical medical problems, usually in terms of an illness or disorder. Examples of medicalization include seeing mental health as largely medical/biological rather than a result of social/environmental factors, a focus on nameable/diagnosable conditions, and a greater reliance on medication that is often advertised via media.
