The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is a decade long construction project to build a hydro-electric dam on the Nile. It is estimated to cost around 7% of Ethiopia's GDP. The dam will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa and will allow Ethiopia to export energy to neighboring countries. The dam is opposed by Egypt and Sudan, two countries to the north of Ethiopia, because the project will massively reduce the amount of water flowing through the Nile when the countries are already experiencing a water shortage. The three countries have been unable to come to a deal.
