The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is the largest federal nutrition program in the United States. Low-income individuals and families can apply for SNAP benefits and are awarded these benefits monthly based on proven need. SNAP beneficiaries receive a plastic card, known as an EBT card, which is like a debit card that can only be used at grocery stores with a different amount on it depending on the severity of the recipients’ financial situation and size of the recipients’ family. In the status quo, recipients can purchase any food item with their EBT card but not alcohol, vitamins, and hot-prepared foods.
