The Golden Shield Project, also known as the Great Firewall, is an initiative launched by the Chinese Communist Party in the early 2000s to control the Chinese population’s usage of the internet. This primarily involves the mass-censoring of Western websites such as Google, Wikipedia, Facebook, and the BBC. Under the Great Firewall, all internet traffic in China is routed through a limited number of filtration checkpoints which inspect, and sometimes modify, the data.
