After apartheid, the South African government established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past abuses during apartheid and assist with rehabilitation and reparation. The commission was empowered to grant amnesty to those who committed abuses, as long as the crimes were politically motivated and there was full, public disclosure by the person seeking amnesty. In all, almost 1,000 individuals were granted amnesty.
