The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military and political alliance formed after WW2 in order to protect Western Europe from the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it has since expanded to include most countries in Eastern Europe. Article 5 of NATO provides that, if a member is the victim of an armed attack, every other member will aid in its defense.
