In his landmark 1972 paper, philosopher Peter Singer argued that nearly all humans in the developed world act deeply immorally every day of their lives by opting to not donate the excess of their income to charities that help prevent suffering around the globe. For example, Singer would believe that it is immoral for an individual to go out to a nice dinner with their family if they could have simply fed themselves using cheaper food, because they could have donated the difference to a charity that would do far more good with the money (eg: Oxfam, UNICEF, the Malaria Consortium).
