Hiroo Oonda was an intelligence officer in the Imperial Japanese Army during WWII. Oonda was stationed deep in the jungle on a remote island in the Philippines and did not get word of Japan’s surrender to the Allied Powers in 1945. Consequently, Oonda operated as if the war was still ongoing—isolating himself as a guerilla in the jungle and surviving by foraging and occasionally stealing local rice. This continued for over 25 years during which time Oonda received little-to-no communication with the Japanese government or the outside world.
