In commonlaw, a "duty to rescue" means that you will be legally punished for failing to aid a person in peril. Currently, there is a legal duty to rescue only in cases where a] you are responsible for the hazard or b] you have a special relationship with the person in peril (e.g. parents, babysitters, employers).
