Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a broad coalition of Western nations—including the United States, the European Union members, and other allied countries—responded by imposing a series of stringent economic sanctions on Russia. One of the most significant measures taken was the complete halt of Russian oil imports. Due to this, the price of Russian Oil significantly decreased. Seeing opportunity, India dramatically increased its own importation of Russian Oil. In 2021, 2% of India’s energy imports came from Russia – in 2024, 40% came from Russia.
