Throughout the 1960s to 1980s, many post-colonial movements in Africa established African Independent Churches (AICs). These churches, often founded by black pastors, liberally re-interpreted the bible to spread anti-colonial messaging in two major ways. One was a pan-African messaging (highlighting the collective / continental struggle against Europeans), whereas the other was a indigenous messaging, which highlights the specific, regional cultural practices of its members and the importance of preserving it against Colonial rule.
