Case:
Background: The actor is press secretary to a first term democratic president (time-space around 2005, though the president is not a real president). The next fiscal year is set to start soon (it starts in October and it's mid-September) which means the budget needs to be passed. The budget that is currently set to be approved by congress in the next week or so has several concessions to democrats in it, but it also has an amendment attached to it called the marriage and family act which is essentially a federal ban on gay marriage. The president has expressed that he wants a clean budget bill with no attached amendments, but has not explicitly decided whether he would sign this bill or not if it ended up on his desk.
Meanwhile a rumor has just come out speculating that the press secretary is a lesbian because she played basketball in college and has never publicly dated anyone. The story comes from a not so reliable news source (think like Buzzfeed) but members of the press corps have begun to question the press secretary about her sexuality.
Caveating that the press secretary is straight and not questioning her sexuality at all, TH as the press secretary would not explicitly deny being gay.
- (This case assumes that people know roughly what the gay marriage sphere looks like circa 2005 - not too many details, but if you don’t know, ask).
- Some facts about the actor - she isn’t seeing anybody long term, but has gone on a couple dates here and there.
- We can argue about how much she cares, but I will caveat that she and the president are both broadly in favor of gay rights.
- I’ll also say you have to stick with your decision until circumstances meaningfully change. You can’t go back on your choice tomorrow, but if some unforeseen circumstance happens, you can make another call.
